Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan jointly launched the UPI RUPay card service in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The landmark event saw President Nahyan swipe a card personalized with his name, marking the launch of the service in the UAE capital.
Connection of payment methods
During the bilateral meeting, the two leaders exchanged several major agreements, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Building on the groundwork laid during Modi’s previous visit to Abu Dhabi, an agreement was signed to link payment and messaging systems, boosting connectivity between Indian and Emirati financial networks.

Another major deal centered on domestic debit/credit card connectivity — RuPay (India) with JAYWAN (UAE). The move aims to strengthen cooperation in the financial sector and promote wider acceptance of RuPay cards in the UAE, a significant step towards strengthening bilateral economic ties.
UPI goes global
Just a day earlier, India announced that its UPI payment service will now be available in Mauritius and Sri Lanka.
Earlier on February 2, India formally launched UPI at the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.
