Two members of a notorious criminal gang have been arrested for shooting at Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s home in apparent retaliation for the star killing two antelopes decades ago.
Accused of several murders and extortion, the Bishnoi gang comes from a wider religious sect in the desert that considers the species to be the reincarnation of their guru.
Salman Khan, 58, has been wanted by the group since 1998 for shooting two blackbucks on a recreational hunt. Jailed gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi had previously threatened to assassinate Khan.
Two men on a motorcycle fired at Khan’s first-floor apartment in Mumbai’s posh Bandra neighborhood in the early hours of Sunday, and also fired several shots in the air before fleeing.
Khan, who is always guarded by armed police because of the threat to his life, was at home when the shots rang out.
Two men, aged 24 and 21, were arrested on Tuesday in the western state of Gujarat, police said.
Members of the Bishnoi community prosecuted Khan for shooting blackbucks for 20 years.
