Sports Ministry approves foreign training for Lakshya and Sindhu

Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu will train in France and Germany as part of their Olympic preparations after the Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell sanctioned financial assistance for both of them.

Sen was seeking financial assistance for a 12-day training course in Marseille, France. Sen, who will compete in the men’s singles in Paris, will train at The Halle des Sports Parsemain with his coach and support staff from July 8 to 21 ahead of the Olympics.

Sindhu’s suggestion was for Saarbrucken to train at the Hermann-Neuberger Sportschule in Germany. He will train there with his coach and support staff for over a month before heading to Paris.

“The MOC has approved their funding of their air tickets, boarding/accommodation costs, local transport fees, visa fees and shuttle costs under the Ministerial Targeted Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS),” the ministry said in a release.

During the meeting, the MOC also approved table tennis player Sreeja Akula and archer Tish Punia’s proposals for support to purchase equipment and golfer Aditi Ashok and swimmer Aryan Nehra’s request for travel assistance for various competitions.

“TOPS will fund their airfare, accommodation costs, local transport costs and Aryan equipment and the Aditi porter fee.” The MOC also approved inclusion of table tennis player Harmeet Desai and the women’s 4×400 relay team in the TOPS core group and promotion of wrestlers Nisha (68 kg) and Reetika (76 kg) to the core group.
