History of Republic Day
Republic Day was celebrated after the implementation of our Constitution of India on 26 January 1950 which further amended the Government of India Act which imposed the date on our country.
It was on August 15, 1947 that India gained independence, but till then India was deprived of any constitution of its own. The laws were largely held by the Government of India Act, 1935. Later, on 29 August 1947, a resolution was passed to hire a drafting committee headed by Dr. BR Ambedkar as President to create an unbiased constitution of our USA. It took about 2 years and 11 months to put together the indicators as per our Indian Constitution. Finally, on January 26, 1950, our Indian Charter came into force.
Meaning of Republic Day
Republic Day is a source of immense satisfaction for Indians all over the world, symbolizing the end of the War of Independence and the establishment of a self-governing country. It serves as a tribute to the democratic ideals enshrined in our constitution and leads the nation. Moreover, Republic Day represents India’s cultural richness and unity in diversity, epitomized with the help of grand celebrations in New Delhi.
Why is Republic Day celebrated?
On 26 January 1950, the Government of India Act 1935, drafted by the British, was replaced by the Constitution of India; on this day the Constitution was officially observed and stood tall as a picture of India’s experience of becoming a republic. Despite achieving freedom on 15 August 1947, India operated under the Government of India Act 1935 and lacked a permanent constitution. Under the leadership of Dr. BR Ambedkar who is also called the ‘Father of Indian Constitution’ a drafting committee was formed and after 3 years on 26th January 1950 when the constitution was adopted.
