Maharashtra to develop a new city -Third Mumbai

A growing population that presents a challenge without space is not a new problem for the city of dreams. To accommodate all those who want to live in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has launched a project to provide better infrastructure and connectivity to cater to the growing population.

The state government has completed a broad master plan for the development of a new city dubbed ‘Third Mumbai’.

The development comes almost a year after Chief Minister Dy Devendra Fadnavis announced the idea on November 27, 2022.

He said, “As of now, we have 2 Mumbais – Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, but once all our infra projects are completed, there will be a third Mumbai. Along with roads and metro, we are putting major emphasis on port-led connectivity and the ecosystem!”

What will the third Mumbai offer?

Reports stated that the Third Mumbai will offer all the necessary infrastructure that a well-developed city should have. From residential (luxury and affordable), commercial complexes, data centers, centers for MNCs and banks and finance companies to large knowledge parks; he will have everything. There will also be robust public transport.

What can you expect?

1) Possible BKC as established in Kharghar

2) MMR, which will create the potential to touch the US$0.25 trillion economy

3) New Panvel-Karjat suburban railway corridor (three tunnels and two railway flyovers)

4) Reshaping the far ends of the MMR

5) The New Town Development Authority (NTDA) was established.

6) 200 villages will come under NTDA

This city was planned to boost economic activity in the region and increase the country’s GDP. “A second BKC is also planned in Kharghar. Around 150 hectares of land is expected to be available for its development into a purely commercial area,” the official added.

He plans to make the MMR a $0.25 trillion economy

The Government of Maharashtra plans to develop the MMR to generate an economy worth USD 0.25 trillion. Mumbai city is approximately 600 km2, Navi Mumbai about 344 km² and Naina about 370 km² with 174 villages. Sources added that the MMRDA and the country’s planning agency NITI Aayog are working together to increase Mumbai’s GDP from the current USD 140 billion to USD 300 billion by 2030 and Third Mumbai is an important part of the plan.
