Indian police block roads to halt farmers marching to New Delhi

Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 in the national capital. It has banned assembly, gatherings and processions, restricted the entry of tractors and carts, explosive or corrosive substances, banned provocative statements and actions and loud speakers ahead of the farmers’ march on February 13.

Delhi and Haryana authorities have fortified the border by erecting concrete blocks, roadblocks and barbed wire to prevent the entry of farmers who plan to march to Delhi on February 13. Farmers from all over the country participate in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ March. Samyukta Kisan Morcha president Jagjit Singh Dallewal put the figure at 200 unions.

In addition, traffic restrictions were imposed ahead of the March 13 demonstration and security was beefed up at the Singh, Ghazipur and Tikri borders.

What do farmers want?

An Act guaranteeing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops and determining the prices of crops according to the commission report of Dr. M. S. Swaminathan.

Other requirements:

– Complete debt forgiveness for farmers and workers

– Implementation of the Land Acquisition Act 2013 with provisions for written consent of farmers before acquisition and compensation of four times the collection rate

– punishing the perpetrators of the Lakhimpur Kheri murders of October 2021;

– withdrawing from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and freezing all free trade agreements;

– Pensions for farmers and agricultural workers;

– compensation for farmers who died during the protest in Delhi, including work for one family member;

– scrapping of the 2020 amendment to the Electricity Act

– 200 (instead of 100) days of employment under MGNREGA per year, daily wage of Rs 700 and the scheme should be linked to agriculture

– Strict sanctions and fines for companies producing fake seeds, pesticides and fertilizers; improving seed quality;

– National Commission for Spices like Chili and Turmeric
