In its seasonal outlook for the hot weather period, the department said April to June would see above-normal maximum temperatures likely over most parts of the country, except some parts of east and northeast India and pockets of northwest India.
Not only the maximum but also the minimum temperatures are likely to be above normal in most parts of the country except some isolated areas in North East and North West India.
Meteorologists have also predicted longer heat waves for this summer. IMD Director General Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha will experience heat waves in April, May and June. A heat wave is a period of abnormally high temperatures that exceed the normal maximum temperature for a hot weather season. “Above-normal heat wave days are likely to occur over most parts of southern peninsula, central India, eastern India and plains of northwest India,” the ministry said in its seasonal update.
During heat waves, elevated temperatures pose significant risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children and those with pre-existing health conditions who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In addition, prolonged periods of extreme heat can cause dehydration and stress infrastructure such as power grids and transportation systems., the IMD said.
