Hold on to your hats as India braces for record-breaking scorching temperatures in 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “red alert” for West Bengal and Odisha till the end of the month. An “orange alert” has been issued for sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar and landlocked Karnataka.
The IMD has forecast “heat wave to severe heat wave” in eastern and southern India for the next five days. An increase in maximum temperature of 2-3 degrees Celsius over East India is expected in the next 48 hours, followed by heat waves in Maharashtra and large parts of South India during the next five days.
The IMD has also predicted some rainfall accompanied by thundershowers, lightning and winds over the western Himalayan region from April 26 to 29. Similar weather conditions are expected to persist over the plains of northwest India from April 26 to 28 and extend into adjoining central India. from April 26 to 27.

In a recent announcement, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that 2023 has secured the title of “warmest year on record”. The global average temperature at the surface has soared to 1.45 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial baseline.
Both the IMD and the WMO agree that 2024 is poised to break new records as the warmest year since temperature tracking efforts began. The IMD predicts a sustained rise in temperatures till May, leading to severe heat waves. The frequency of heatwave days is projected to exceed normal levels in the coming months, with a focus on north and central India.
