IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi opens its first international campus in UAE

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, officially inaugurated the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi on Monday. The first batch of undergraduates to progress to B-Tech degrees in Energy Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering were welcomed by the Crown Prince.

This first batch of 52 students was selected through the JEE Advanced exam and the newly introduced Combined Admission Test (CAET) for international candidates. The undergraduate cohort is diverse, including Indian, Emirati and global students. This is the first international campus of IIT Delhi.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, launched strategic partnerships during the event between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi, its parent campus IIT-Delhi, and leading institutions of higher learning in Abu Dhabi such as Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Khalifa University, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University. This coordinated effort will support collaborative research, scholarly projects, and student and staff exchanges.

Collaboration between Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and IIT Delhi

Cooperation with the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will enable joint participation in research projects, exchange of postgraduate students and organization of scientific seminars. According to WAM, the official news agency of the United Arab Emirates, the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will host internships, conduct collaborative research and provide grants for start-up projects.

Sheikh Khaled hailed the opening of the development milestone as a critical step in Abu Dhabi’s attempts to establish itself as a global center for research and development, the National reported. Sheikh Khaled, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, was on hand as several agreements were signed between Abu Dhabi IIT and some of the leading universities in the emirate.

IIT Delhi is one of the 23 prestigious institutes in India, known for producing eminent engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators. According to the report, IITs are often referred to as India’s MIT and Harvard. Sheikh Khaled visited the campus and outlined its diverse academic program, including courses in energy, engineering and computer science.

According to the report, in July 2023, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed an agreement between the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Education and Knowledge, IIT Delhi and the Indian Ministry of Education to formalize the establishment of IIT-Delhi.
