EAM Jaishankar meets Oman Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik in Delhi

Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has landed in the national capital on a three-day state visit to India.

He was welcomed by V Muraleedharan, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs of India. According to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Prime Minister is visiting the country along with a high-level delegation of ministers and senior officials.

Visit of Sultan of Oman to India: Plan

Day 1: His Sultan of Oman will also be invited by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today for Day 1.

Day 2: The Sultan of Oman was invited by PM Modi and President Murmum to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for a welcoming ceremony on 16 December.

Day 3: The Sultan of Oman will also visit the National Gallery of Modern Art here and hold a meeting with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House on the second day of his visit. During his visit, PM Modi will also host a lunch in his honour.

Visit of the Sultan of Oman to India: Key Interviews and Discussions

The ongoing visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman to India is set to elevate the existing strategic partnership between the two nations and highlight the promotion of trade, investment and cooperation across various sectors.

Discussions between Sultan Haitham and the Indian leadership in New Delhi aim to promote integration and cooperation and pave the way for better cooperation.

Oman’s exports to India, worth RO 699.218 million, included products such as petroleum, minerals, LNG, polyethylene, propylate, aluminum and urea.

Sector discussions include industry, construction, trade, transport, communications, oil and gas, mining, quarrying, education, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and health. The Sultan’s visit signifies a commitment to further strengthen these economic ties and support mutual growth.

These relations, the ambassador noted, have flourished during the current era, strengthened by the wise leadership of both countries and a shared vision of a growing political position and a developed and prosperous economy.

India-Oman relations

India and Oman have a long-standing friendship based on historical, cultural and economic ties. In addition, human contacts between India and Oman can be traced back 5,000 years.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1955 and in 2008 these relations were upgraded to a strategic partnership.

Oman is also India’s closest defense partner in the Persian Gulf region and defense cooperation has become a key pillar of the strategic partnership between India and Oman.

Oman is the only country in West Asia where all three branches of the Indian Army hold regular military-level bilateral exercises and talks.

As of the end of the third quarter of 2023, the trade exchange between Oman and India was RO 1.447 billion.
