The season’s first severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, ‘Remal’, could hit Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coast by Sunday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
According to the IMD report, the storm could reach a wind speed of 102 km per hour on Sunday. The Met Office has warned of very heavy rainfall over the coastal areas of West Bengal, North Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur on May 26-27.
This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season and will be named Remal, after the cyclone naming system of the Indian Ocean region.
The system will concentrate in a low pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday morning.. It will further intensify into a cyclonic storm by Saturday morning and reach Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coast as a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday evening,” the IMD said.

News agency PTI quoted IMD senior scientist DS Pai as saying that warmer sea surface temperatures mean more moisture, which is favorable for the intensification of cyclones.
“The cyclone will not intensify if the vertical wind shear is very large. It will weaken,” Rajeevan said. Models indicate that the cyclone will not affect the progress of the monsoon, a senior meteorologist said. However, Pai said it could affect the progress of the monsoon in some parts.
He said, “The system will initially help the monsoon advance across the Bay of Bengal. After that, it will decouple from the monsoon circulation and pull down a lot of moisture, which could result in a slight delay in the monsoon advance in the area.”
