The Supreme Court of India on Friday granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till June 1 in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate related to Delhi’s excise duty policy.
A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta ordered Kejriwal to surrender on June 2. The SC’s move was welcomed by the INDIA bloc parties, which have come together to defeat the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Kejriwal has been in jail since March 21.
Arvind Kejriwal Interim Bail Updates
– The Supreme Court has imposed several conditions on Arvind Kejriwal while granting interim bail such as – no interaction with any of the witnesses in the case; he is barred from accessing any official files related to the case and cannot comment on his role in the case.
– The court also barred Arvind Kejriwal from visiting his office or secretariat in Delhi and signing official files unless it is strictly necessary to obtain the Lt. Governor’s approval.
– The SC asked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo to grant bail of ₹50,000 with one surety in like amount to the satisfaction of the jail superintendent.
– The Supreme Court is hearing Kejriwal’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court’s verdict last month that upheld his arrest in the case. The court said arguments on Kejriwal’s plea against his arrest will continue next week and will try to pass a verdict on the petition before the summer vacation begins on May 20.
– Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called on the public to unite against “dictatorship” and said he was fighting “with everything he has” after his release from jail on interim bail on Friday.
– Arvind Kejriwal announced a press conference at the AAP party office on Saturday. At 11 am, the Delhi CM will visit the Lord Hanuman temple at Connaught Place.
– The Delhi Lok Sabha polls will be held on May 25 – the sixth phase of the election process. In the 2019 general elections, the BJP achieved a complete victory, winning all seven seats in the state capital.
