International Emmy Awards 2023: Ekta Kapoor bags Directorate Award, Vir Das for Comedy

The International Emmy Awards is an event that is conducted every year and is organized by the International Academy of Television Arts and Science. It is conducted to honor and praise the best people in the World of Television across various countries. The 51st International Emmy Awards was held in New York. This year, several Indian artists have been nominated for the International Emmy Awards, including Vir Das, Shefali Shah, Jim Sarbh, and Ekta Kapoor.

There were more than 56 nominees in 14 categories across 20 countries. Comedian Vir Das was nominated for the Best Comedy Award, and Jim Sarbh and Shefali Shah were nominated for the Best Actor and Actress Award.

International Emmy Award Winner in India 2023

India brought two Emmy Awards home as Vir Das won the best comedy award for Netflix’s Vir Das: Landing. It was a tie for the best comedy award between Vir and Derry Girls season 3. Vir became the first Indian comedian to achieve this award.

The second award was earned by the renowned Indian television producer, Ekta Kapoor. She was awarded the International Emmy Directorate Award, which made her the first Indian woman producer to receive this award.

Jim Sarbh was nominated for the International Emmy Award 2023 for his amazing performance in the show Rocket Boys under the category of best actor, but he lost to Martin Freeman as he was awarded for his role in The Responder.

Apart from Jim Sarbh, actress Shefali Shah was also nominated for her superb role in Delhi Crime Season 2 under the category of Best Performance by an Actress. But Shefali lost against Karla Souza, as she won the award for her prestigious role in the Mexican series La Caida.

History of Emmy Awards in India

The International Emmy Awards were first held on January 25, 1949, in Los Angeles. Every year, India is also nominated for the International Emmy Award. However, there are fewer nominations and winners from India for the International Emmy Awards.

In 2022, India was not able to secure the Emmy Award. In 2021, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vir Das, and Sushmita Sen were nominated under various categories, but no one was able to secure the award.

In 2020, Arjun Mathur of Made in Heaven was nominated for the Best Actor award but could not make it. Web Series, Four More Shots, please, and Delhi Crime were also nominated. Delhi Crime was the first Indian series and the first award for India in the International Emmy Awards.

In 2019, director Anurag Kashyap and actors Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui were nominated for the award under different categories, but no one secured the award.
