The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in Bengaluru and ten other districts of Karnataka for two consecutive days till May 31 due to heavy rain in the last few days.
On Tuesday, the IMD said a yellow alert had been issued for Bengaluru and 10 other districts — including Kodagu, Mysuru, Udupi, Gulbarga, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Hassan, Chamrajnagar, Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada — in Karnataka.
The Bangalore Met department said there was a high possibility of waterlogging, waterlogged roads, flooded subways, traffic jams and fallen trees in some areas and asked commuters to remain vigilant.
It added that the power supply was temporarily interrupted in some areas of Bangalore. Bengaluru will receive light to moderate rainfall till June 3, the IMD said.
“The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of Southwest Bay of Bengal, some other parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands and some parts of East Central Bay of Bengal today. Hence, there are heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana today , over Tamil Nadu, coastal and south interior Karnataka and over Kerala from May 30 to June 3,” an IMD official said.
He added that monsoon rains arrived over the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 19 but had made no progress till May 30.
Newly elected Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said on Tuesday that he has ensured that “all officers including commissioners and joint commissioners are on high alert”. “BBMP should respond to people in a friendly manner. Measures should be taken to ensure free flow of rainwater during monsoon,” he said.
Bengaluru Traffic Alert: Waterlogged Routes
Due to excessive rainfall, heavy waterlogging has occurred in the Karnataka capital and as per reports, the affected areas include Devarabeesanahalli and outer ring road, Salem under bridge at Mahadevapura, Roopena Agrahara and Hosur Road, railway underpass, Sheshadripuram, Dhananjaya Palace Road, Vijayanagar, Nagarjuna Junction, Bannerghatta Road and Anil Kumble Circle.
Bengaluru Protest: National Highway to be blocked today
The Cauvery dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has been the subject of discussion for the past month or so, with several farmers’ unions and pro-Kannada organizations protesting Karnataka’s order to give water to Tamil Nadu. After Bengaluru Bandh and Karnataka Bandh, pro-Kannada organizations will block the National Highway near Hoskote Toll in Bengaluru today as part of their protest.
