Spain’s Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he will retire from professional tennis after November’s Davis Cup final in Malaga. The 38-year-old has won 22 Grand Slam titles and one Olympic singles gold in his career.
After winning 22 Grand Slam titles and Olympic singles gold, the Spaniard brought down the curtain on one of the most extraordinary careers.
Among his biggest rivalries, the most famous is with the Swiss legend Roger Federer. Nadal first disrupted Federer’s dominance of the sport in 2000 before Djokovic’s rise.
When Nadal announced his retirement, he signed an X and wrote, “Thank you all very much” in 13 languages.

Say goodbye to the Madrid Open
Back in the first week of May, the tennis legend waved an emotional farewell to fans at the Madrid Open, which he won five times during his 23-year career.
He was presented with five banners commemorating the titles he won in the ten years between 2008 and 2017 and a special trophy from tournament director Felicano Lopez after his fourth round loss to Jiří Lehecká.
Nadal’s injury
Rafael Nadal played just 15 matches from January 2023 to May 2024 due to multiple injuries, including a muscle tear. His injuries over the years have seen the Manacor native miss 12 Grand Slams in his career.
After announcing that he would not play at the 2023 French Open, Nadal mentioned that he may retire at the end of 2024. He cited a series of injuries that were taking a toll on his body as the reason.

Although he returned to competitive action in Brisbane in January, a thigh injury sidelined him again, leading to him missing the Australian Open.
During the European clay season, Nadal played four tournaments. After that he played only two more tournaments, one in Bastad and the Olympic Games at Roland Garros.
He was included in Spain’s squad for the Davis Cup finals in September, which are scheduled for November 19-24.
