Kirana Raa’s Laapataa Ladies is India’s official entry to the Oscars 2025. After winning the hearts of the entire country with its heartfelt story and incredible performances, the film has been selected for competition at the 97th Academy Awards.
The film will be included in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
On Monday, the Film Federation of India announced Kiran Rao’s rural drama as the official entry for the 97th Academy Awards.
The film, which tells the story of two young brides, beat 29 Indian films in the race for the Oscars. The film was up against big titles like Cannes winner All We Imagine as Light, Animal, Sam Bahadur, Chandu Champion, Kalki 2898 AD, Joram and Maidaan.
The big announcement comes days after director Roa said her dream will come true if her film is selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards.
“My dream would come true if that happened, if it went (to the Oscars). But it’s a process and I hope it (Laapataa Ladies) will be considered. I’m sure the best film will be chosen whoever they choose. scheme of things,” Rao told PTI.

The film, which was released in March, met with extraordinary response from critics and audiences alike. Set in rural India, the film tells the powerful story of two brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey. The film provides a strong message about gender equality, women’s education and empowerment.
The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastav and Pratibha Ranta in lead roles along with Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.
The film was co-produced by actor Aamir Khan. Interestingly, Khan also produced and starred in Lagaan, which was the third Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. after Mother India (1957) and Salaam Bombay! (1988). Hope Laapataa Ladies also found a mention in the final list of nominations.
