5-year-old Punjab boy youngest Asian to conquer Mt Kilimanjaro

Teghbir Singh, a five-year-old boy from Ropar, Punjab, has created a remarkable record as the youngest person from Asia to scale Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Teghbir reached Uhuru Peak, the mountain’s highest point at 5,895 meters, on 23 August after starting the climb on 18 August.

During his climb, Teghbir drew strength from chanting “Wahe Guru”, a mantra encouraged by his family, to help him overcome the more difficult sections of the climb. His achievement is particularly impressive given the trek’s harsh conditions, which include sub-zero temperatures and low oxygen levels at high altitudes.

The trip was carefully planned and executed with the help of Teghbir’s father, Sukhinderdeep Singh, and coach Bikramjit Singh Ghuman, a retired handball coach, who prepared Teghbir with cardiovascular and lung capacity exercises. The young climber trained for almost a year, hiking every week and following a strict diet to optimize his physical condition.

Despite adverse weather conditions and a snowstorm that initially forced them to retreat, Teghbir and his team, which included his father, two guides and two support workers, successfully scaled the summit on a second attempt via the Machame route.

Teghbir is set to return to India on August 30, bringing home not only his mountaineering certificate from the Tanzania National Parks, but also an inspiring story of youthful resilience and success.
