The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday announced that admissions to universities in India will be allowed twice a year on par with foreign institutions, PTI reported.
UGC chief Jagadesh Kumar said, “Universities in India will be able to offer admission twice a year through foreign institutions. The first admission cycle will be held in July-August, while the second will be held in January-February, starting with the current academic session.
Global competitiveness
The UGC chairman noted that universities across the world follow a twice-yearly admission system. Changing the admission cycle throughout the country’s universities is done with the aim of improving their global competitiveness.
The proposed changes to the admissions cycle will allow higher education institutions to improve international cooperation and student exchange programs.

These mid-year university admissions are being conducted to align India’s higher education system with global education standards, UGC chief Jagadesh Kumar told news agency PTI. However, the proposed changes in university admissions are subject to the discretion of the universities and are not binding.

After adjusting their institutional regulations, universities can flexibly increase student intake and offer new programs in emerging fields.
Jagadesh Kumar said colleges need to work on administrative complexities, good planning for increased utilization of available resources and provide seamless support systems to continue the admission process in two years. These indicators should be kept in mind for a smooth transition of students admitted at different times of the year.
