Narendra Modi sworn in for third term as prime minister of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term almost a week after the Lok Sabha election results. After a strong victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he is preparing to form a government with his new cabinet. Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a clear majority, guaranteeing him re-appointment for a third term.

In the new coalition government, 30 Cabinet Ministers, five Ministers of State (an independent body) and 36 Ministers of State took oath of secrecy and office in addition to Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu.

Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar – all ministers in the Modi 2.0 cabinet – were sworn in as cabinet ministers at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Chouhan is one of six former chief ministers in the cabinet; others are Rajnath Singh of Uttar Pradesh, Manohar Lal Khattar of Haryana, Sarbananda Sonowal of Assam, Jitan Ram Manjhi of Bihar and HD Kumaraswamy of Karnataka.

24 states are represented in the 72-member Council of Ministers. Of the ministers, 27 are from Other Backward Classes (OBC), 10 from Scheduled Castes (SC), five from Scheduled Tribes (ST) and five from minorities.

As many as 43 ministers served three or more terms in parliament and 39 had a previous ministerial post; 34 were legislators in state assemblies.

From heads of state and government from India’s neighboring countries to construction workers, Vande Bharat Express locomotive pilots, film stars and business executives, it is estimated that the ceremony where President Draupadi Murmu was sworn in, Prime Minister and ministers attended the ceremony. It is a first for them. Seven prime ministers are united in the new Modi government.
