Welcome to the best of our coverage of Match 5 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 between Afghanistan and Uganda at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, West Indies on Tuesday, June 4.
In the match, Afghanistan outclassed Uganda by an amazing margin of 125 runs. Brian Masaba’s side, making their debut in the 20-over exhibition, fought well and restricted the Afghans to a total of 183 runs in the first innings. However, the sheer gulf in class showed in the second innings as Fazalhaq Farooqi produced a superb display of seam bowling, returning career-best figures of 5-9 in four overs to help Uganda post a 58-run total.
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan:
The kind of start we wanted as a team. It doesn’t matter who we play, it’s about the mindset. The hard work we’ve put in over the last few weeks, the way the openers have started and the way our bowlers have bowled – it’s just been a great team effort overall. (On leading the team) Super exciting, proud feeling leading the team to the World Cup. I’m enjoying it so far and we have some tough games ahead of us. That’s the beauty of this team. We have so many options and that makes it easier for us as captains. If some bowlers are not having a good day, we have options. The good thing is that they always deliver.

This gave them the belief that they could beat any team at any time. It’s not just about skill and talent, it’s also about belief and focusing on what we’re doing rather than thinking about what the opposition is doing. (To New Zealand) Big game for us. It’s about keeping things simple.
