After water, Bengaluru may soon face a beer shortage

The city of Bengaluru is likely to witness a beer shortage in the near future as pubs and breweries in the city struggle to keep up with rising demand amid the water crisis and steamy weather.

Beer sales have increased recently due to a surge in demand, resulting in inventories falling to an all-time low. Several pubs and breweries in the city are struggling to get enough stock, and some are toying with the idea of ending weekend deals such as buy 2 get 1 and buy 1 get 1 (BOGO).

Why is the city struggling with a beer shortage?

The main factor resulting in the shortage of beer in Bengaluru is the increasing demand for the drink which is most preferred in the summer season.

According to the report, around 30,000 liters of beer were sold this year, compared to around 9,000 liters last year. This year’s supply and consumption of beer exceeded the expectations of producers, who attributed this to the sub-optimal fruit season and long weekends associated with the ongoing IPL T20 tournament – factors that create an ideal situation for beer consumption.

Producers point to the fruit season and long weekends as contributing to unprecedented demand. A representative of a major brewery in Marathahalli cited suboptimal mangoes for reducing sales of fruit beer, prompting consumers to opt for regular beer.
