Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer is visiting India at a time when India has announced that it will withdraw its troops from the Maldives by May 10. The decision comes after the Maldivian government headed by Mohamed Muizza officially asked India to remove its troops from the capital Male.
Mohamed Muizzu, who is known to be friendly to China, has sent his foreign minister, Moos Zameer, on an official visit to India. This happened almost six months after Muizzu became the president of the Maldives.
Now, instead of going to India himself, Muizzu sent his foreign minister, Zameer, who arrived in Delhi on Wednesday evening. On 3 May, India and the Maldives held their fourth high-level bilateral core group meeting. They discussed the replacement of Indian military personnel from the Maldives by 10 May and confirmed that the Maldivian government would replace the military personnel before that date. Earlier, the Maldivian government headed by Mohamed Muizza had officially asked India to withdraw its troops from Male.

Zameer is on a three-day visit to India at a time when diplomatic relations between Delhi and Male have been strained for the past six months. His visit is significant as Muizzu’s government in the Maldives faces pressure to mend relations with India despite its close ties with China.
Zameer’s visit is significant as he is the first Maldivian government representative to visit India after three deputy ministers from the island nation made negative comments about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which outraged Indian authorities.
As Moos Zameer’s visit continues, both countries are working to maintain strong relations and mutual respect.
