Air India Express cancels 70 flights after crew members take mass sick leaves

Air India Express canceled about 70 and delayed many flights as several cabin crew members reported feeling sick last night. According to reports, employees have called in sick to protest mismanagement by authorities at the Tata Group-owned airline.

“Guests flying with us today are requested to check if their flight is affected before traveling to the airport,” Air India Express said.

Discontent in the cabin crew segment of the low-cost carriers has been growing for some time, especially since the merger process between AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India, and itself began.

An Air India spokesperson said of the situation: “Some of our cabin crew have reported illness at the last minute, starting last night, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. While we are working with the crew to understand the reasons behind these events.” , our teams are actively addressing this issue to minimize any inconvenience caused to our guests.”

Late last month, a union representing a section of Air India Express cabin crew alleged that the airline was mismanaged and that employees were not treated equally.

The Air India Express Employees Union, a respected trade union that claims to represent about 300 cabin crew, most of whom are senior, also said the mishandling of matters had deeply affected staff morale.

On Wednesday, several travelers took to social media to protest the sudden cancellation of the flight.

The incident comes a month after another Tata Group airline, Vistara, faced a pilot shortage, forcing it to cut the carrier’s flight capacity by 10 percent, or about 25-30 flights a day.

As part of consolidation of its airline business, Tata Group will merge Air India Express and AIX Connect as well as Vistara with Air India.
