Indian couple from Gujarat gives up billion-dollar lifestyle to become monks

A Gujarati businessman and his wife gained attention by giving away their lifetime earnings (in billions of dollars). Living in Himmatnagar, Sabarkantha District, Gujarat, Bhavesh Bhai Bhandari and his wife decided to live as monks, leaving behind all material luxuries.

The choice surprised many and sparked discussions on social networks. Hailing from a well-to-do family in Sabarkantha, Bhavesh Bhai Bhandari had a privileged upbringing. He worked in the construction industry, managing projects in Sabarkantha and Ahmedabad.

The Bhandari family has strong ties with the Jain community and often interacts with monks and devotees. Now both Bhavesh Bhai and his wife have decided to live a simple life without any luxuries like fans, air conditioners or mobile phones.

Their children, a 16-year-old son and a 19-year-old daughter, decided to become monks in 2022, inspiring Bhavesh Bhai and his wife to do the same.

In a grand procession in Himmatnagar, the Bhandaris, along with 35 others, vowed to live a disciplined life.

According to reports, they will officially adopt a life of renunciation at the Himmatnagar waterfront on April 22.

The nine-year-old daughter of a wealthy diamond merchant from Gujarat became a monk last year and renounced material comforts.

Her father owns Sanghvi and Sons, a diamond polishing and exporting business in Surat that has been operating for nearly three decades.

The girl showed interest in spiritual life from an early age. His family says that before she officially became a monk, she walked about 700 kilometers with other monks and even adopted their lifestyle.
