India tops YouTube’s video removal list, over 2 million takedowns

Google-owned streaming service YouTube has released its Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for the period October to December 2023, which shows that India tops the list of countries with the highest number of video takedowns.

YouTube downloaded 22,54,902 videos in India during the above period out of a total of 90,12,232 videos downloaded worldwide. In comparison, Singapore was second on the list with 12,43,871 stops and the United States was third with 7,88,354 video stops.

According to data shared by YouTube, 96% of these videos were reported using “auto-reporting,” meaning they were detected by a machine, not a human. Meanwhile, about 3,000 videos were reported by users, about 52,000 videos were reported by organizations, and only 4 videos were reported by government agencies.

The company also revealed that around 51.15% of the removed videos had zero views, 26.43% of the videos had 0-10 views and only 1.25% of the videos had more than 10,000 views.

The streaming giant also revealed the reasons for removing these videos: 39.4% of videos were found to be dangerous or harmful, 32.4% of videos were removed due to child safety concerns, and 7.5% of videos were found to be violent or pornographic. Other reasons for removing videos included nudity or sexual content, harassment and bullying, promotion of violence and violent extremism, and more.

In addition to removing YouTube videos from its platform, it also removed a total of 20,592,341 channels. 92.8% of these channels were removed for spam, fraudulent or deceptive content, 4.5% for nudity or sexual content, and 0.9% for spreading misinformation.
