The coronavirus pandemic is far from over. While several socio-economic indicators show pre-pandemic numbers, the latest data on Covid-19 infections shows a steady rise in key states of northern India. National capital Delhi has recorded 63 cases of coronavirus as of March 7, according to official data from the Union Health Ministry. This is the highest number of daily cases the state capital has recorded since May 2023.
The official website – mygov.in/covid-19 – says India has registered 1,158 active cases of Covid-19 today. Compared to the data for the last 24 hours, this is an increase of 31 cases. Data from March 7 shows another worrying trend. Delhi’s fortnightly figures also show a sharp rise. In the fortnight ending March 7, Delhi recorded 459 cases. That was a far cry from 191 in the fortnight before that and 73 in the last 15 days before that.
Apart from Delhi, the most populous state of the country – Uttar Pradesh has also seen an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. Official data up to March 7 shows that the daily number of people infected with the coronavirus rose to 164 in the week of February 19 to March 5, compared with the week of February 20 to February 4 (when only 12 cases were recorded).
