Freight train runs 70 km from J&K to Punjab ‘without driver’

An investigation was launched on Sunday after an unattended diesel locomotive traveled a distance of more than 70 km from Jammu-Kashmir to Punjab earlier in the day.

The incident had railway officials on high alert throughout, creating massive fear in anticipation of any potential mishap. However, no causality or harm was reported. Officials have secured all railway and road crossings on the Jalandhar-Pathankot stretch to avoid any accidents.

The train stopped at Kathua railway station in Jammu to change the driver. According to preliminary information, it appears that he went down the incline on the Jammu-Jalandhar section, a Northern Railway spokesperson said.

Neither the driver nor the assistant driver was present on the train at the time of the incident. The train traveled more than 70 km before it stopped at Unchi Bassi due to a steep grade. Sandbags were also used to stop the transport.

The spokeswoman added that a thorough investigation is underway into the matter and it is to be investigated whether the train was properly secured at Kathua for descent.
