Hockey India on Friday announced that Janneke Schopman has stepped down as head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, a month after the team failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
Schopmanová sent her resignation to Hockey India president Dr. Dilip Tirkey after the Pro League mini-tournament which was played in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
India missed out on Olympic qualification after losing 0-1 to Japan in the FIH Olympic Qualifiers third place play-off match in Ranchi.
Dreams of securing direct entry to the gold medal at the Asian Games were dashed after last year’s semi-final defeat to China in Hangzhou. The team secured bronze after a 2-1 win over Japan.
Dutchwoman Schopman took over from compatriot Sjoerd Marijne after a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Under Schopman, the team won bronze at the Commonwealth Games and the 2022 FIH Nations Cup title, while lifting the Asian trophy last year.

The Indians won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games under the leadership of the former Dutch international, who was part of the Dutch gold team at the 2008 Olympics and the 2006 World Championships.
India also won the gold medal at home in the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy but failed to qualify for the 2022 Women’s World Cup, 2023 Asian Games and 2024 Olympic qualifiers.
