Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Haasan, who is the president of the Makkal Needhi Maim (MNM) political party, will contest the upcoming general elections from either Coimbatore or Chennai.

Earlier this week, Haasan’s party was given the ”battery torch” symbol. According to reports, the actor’s MNM party is likely to join hands with DMK and Congress and contest as part of the INDIA block alliance.

Haasan made his foray into the political world in 2018 and his party has been quite active in Coimbatore in recent years.

In 2021, he contested the assembly elections from Coimbatore South but lost to BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan by a narrow margin of 1.50 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, MNM candidate, Dr R Mahendran contested from the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat.

The Coimbatore seat is currently represented by the CPI-M, while all the three Chennai seats are bagged by the DMK.

In 2021, Kamal joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. However, the actor later clarified that he did it for a united India, insisting that his participation should not be confused with leaning towards the “party”.

Haasan’s MNM debuted in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with the same flashlight symbol. His party then contested the 2021 council elections.
