Bengaluru has worst traffic congestion in India

The TomTom Traffic Index ranks 387 cities in 55 countries on six continents according to their average travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions. In its latest traffic index, the Dutch geolocation technology firm found that Bengaluru was the most congested city in India last year.

In 2023, it was the second most congested city in the world, after Dublin, the capital of Ireland. In 2022, it maintains its position as the second most congested city, giving first place to London. This data is based on more than 600 million on-board navigation systems and smartphones.

In 2023, the average travel time for 10 km in Bengaluru was 28 minutes 10 seconds, according to a TomTom report. The 13th Transport Index report says the average time taken to travel 10 kilometers in Bengaluru city center has improved by one minute, with the commute taking 29 minutes and 10 seconds in 2022.

MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), highlighted the remarkable reduction in travel time, even after adding around 1 million vehicles. He emphasized that the city’s traffic management efforts have resulted in a positive result as it has reduced travel time while coping with the increase in the number of vehicles.

According to a report by TomTom, the level of congestion in 2023, showing the average additional loss of traffic compared to free-flow conditions, was 63%. Commuters in 2023 spent a significant 132 hours, equivalent to 5 days and 12 hours, traveling through rush hour at an average speed of 18 kilometers per hour.

Apart from Bengaluru, Pune also featured in the top 10 and was found to be the sixth most congested city in the world last year. The average driving time for 10 kilometers was 27 minutes 50 seconds last year.

The other two metropolitan cities, Delhi and Mumbai, are ranked 44th and 52nd respectively in the TomTom Traffic Index. The report revealed that it took an average of 21 minutes 40 seconds to drive 10 kilometers in Delhi in 2023 and 21 minutes 20 seconds in Mumbai last year.
