Centre declares Gujarat’s Surat Airport as International Airport

Gujarat’s Surat airport has been officially upgraded to international status, according to the central government on Wednesday.

The move, initially approved by the Union Cabinet on December 15, represents a monumental step to improve the economic and aviation position of the region, the official said.

The decision taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to accelerate Surat’s transformation into a key hub for the international aviation sector, the statement said.

“Transition of Surat airport to an international facility is a game changer to spur economic development, attract global investment and strengthen diplomatic relations,” he added.

The upgrade to international status is in line with the noticeable increase in passenger and cargo traffic at Surat Airport, indicating a growing demand for improved air services.

Officials anticipate that the airport’s new status will be a catalyst for regional growth and usher Surat into a new era of prosperity.

To expand the airport’s capabilities, a new integrated terminal building was inaugurated in December 2023.

The facility is designed to accommodate 1,200 domestic and 600 international passengers at peak times, with provisions to expand capacity to 3,000 passengers.

The airport’s annual handling capacity will also increase to 55 lakh passengers, underscoring Surat airport’s readiness to embrace its new international identity and the myriad opportunities it brings, the official said.
