The latest list of the world’s most corrupt countries has revealed that most countries around the world are making no progress in the fight against corruption in the public sector.
On Tuesday (January 30), Transparency International released its 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).
As the report notes, “the global CPI average remains unchanged at 43 for the twelfth consecutive year, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50.”
The least corrupt country
Denmark once again emerged as a beacon of integrity, taking the top spot and boasting an impressive score of 90. Its stellar performance, which the report attributed to a “well-functioning justice system”, secured its place at the top for an unprecedented sixth year in a row.
Following Denmark’s example, Finland (87) and New Zealand (85) took second and third place in the weighted ranking.
The most corrupt country
According to the ranking, Somalia is at the bottom with a dismal score of 11 in the index. It was closely followed by Venezuela (13), Syria (13), South Sudan (13) and Yemen (16).
What about India?
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks 180 countries and territories according to their perceived level of corruption in the public sector, according to experts and business people.
This year, India ranked 93rd with a score of 39/100. The ranking was a slight drop from 2022, when the nation held the 85th position with a score of 40.
India’s neighbors Pakistan and Sri Lanka are struggling with scores of 29 and 34 respectively, according to the report.
