England destroyed the Indian batting order on Day 4 in the first Test played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, defeating the hosts by 28 runs.
England’s Ollie Pope has a near double century in the second innings and England’s spinners, especially debutant Tom Hartley who picked 7 wickets, made the Indian batters stumble and lose momentum. India could only score 202 runs and were all out in 69.2 overs.
This is India’s fourth defeat at home in 48 Tests and the biggest ever turnover by a visiting team on Indian soil in terms of first innings deficit.
After winning the toss on Day 1, England scored 246 runs with Ben Stokes (70) and Jonny Bairstow (37) top scoring. For India, Ashwin and Jadeja picked three wickets while Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah took 2 each.

In the second innings, England’s Ollie Pope (196) almost hit a double century, while the rest of the batter barely impressed. Bumrah picked 4 wickets, Ashwin 3, Jadeja 2 and Axar Patel 1 for India.
However, the Indian batsmen failed miserably when they faced the English spinners, especially debutant Tom Hartley, who picked 7 wickets. Jack Leach and Joe Root took one each.
India will take on England for the second Test at the ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam from February 2.
