The Prime Minister launched the ‘Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana’ on January 22 at a meeting at his Lok Kalyan Marg. The aim of the scheme is to install rooftop solar systems in one million homes.

He said the launch of the program is the first decision he has taken after returning from Ayodhya, adding that the initiative aims not only to reduce the cost of electricity for poor and middle-class citizens, but also to promote India’s energy self-sufficiency. sector.

After returning from Ayodhya where he attended the dedication ceremony, PM Modi shared pictures of his discussions with officials regarding the scheme at X.

The Prime Minister has directed the launch of a large-scale national campaign to promote widespread adoption of rooftop solar panels among domestic consumers.

During the meeting, he emphasized that every household with a roof in India can harness the power of the sun to reduce their electricity bills. The Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana seeks to provide electricity to low and middle income individuals by implementing solar rooftop installations while providing additional income opportunities through surplus electricity generation.

India’s solar capacity

As of December 2023, the installed capacity of solar power in India has reached about 73.31 GW, while the installed capacity of rooftop solar power is about 11.08 GW, according to The Indian Express, citing the website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

In terms of total solar capacity, Rajasthan leads with 18.7 GW to secure the top position, while Gujarat follows closely behind with 10.5 GW. In terms of rooftop solar capacity, Gujarat takes the lead with 2.8 GW, followed by Maharashtra in second position with 1.7 GW. Importantly, solar energy makes up a substantial portion of the country’s current renewable energy capacity of approximately 180 GW.
