Climate change causes dry spell in Kashmir: No Snowfall In Gulmarg

Srinagar, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is yet to experience snowfall this year. Known for its ski slopes, Gulmarg remains devoid of the usual winter snow, much to the disappointment of enthusiasts from India and abroad.

This January, it is the first time in recent public memory that Gulmarg and Pahalgam, famous for their snowy landscape, did not see any snow.

There was no snowfall in the plains and below average snowfall in the hilly areas, which contributed to the 79% rainfall deficit during December in the Kashmir Valley.

Experts warn that this reduction in snowfall could lead to water shortages and a potential food crisis in the region.

What’s happening?

Kashmir is in the throes of a dry season, with the valley reporting a 79 percent drop in rainfall and scant snowfall in December 2023. This has raised concerns among environmentalists and those who make a living from tourism.

What is El Nino?

El Nino, a climate pattern, refers to the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that represents the “warm phase” of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It manifests as increased sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

In Kashmir, the influence of El Nino is evident with extended dry spells, milder winters and less snowfall. Experts warn that the region is likely to face more frequent and longer droughts in the future.

Fourth Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg

Lack of snow is also a big disappointment for winter sports enthusiasts who come to Gulmarg for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities.

Gulmarg is gearing up to host the 4th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games from February 2-6. After the success of the first three years, the world-famous ski resort is once again in the spotlight of this event.

For the upcoming year, Gulmarg was designated to host competitions in skiing, snowboarding and ski mountaineering. In addition, Ladakh will be the venue for events on ice, including ice skating and ice hockey.

The Games are set to see the participation of over 400 athletes representing various States, Union Territories and the Army. The competitions will be held at Kongdoori and the main bowl of Gulmarg
